“From my experiences of serving different missions, I’ll say that the government should appoint someone as inspector general of mission to monitor overall functions of the missions,” he said on Saturday, speaking at strategic workshop on making Bangladesh investment friendly.
An administrative cadre officer, Rahman also served in Bangladesh’s missions in Myanmar, Vietnam and New York over the course of his career.
He proposed the concept when the Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority, Rear Admiral M Khaled Iqbal, recommended using Bangladesh’s foreign missions in branding the country abroad to woo investors.
The Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) organsied the two-day workshop at a Bahubal resort in Habiganj district bringing together top officials of all relevant ministries to discuss and devise action plans.
This was organised on the heels of the World Bank ranking Bangladesh 176th among 190 countries in its Doing Business 2017 report.
The newly-created state entity BIDA aims to improve Bangladesh's ranking to at least 99 by 2021, to raise the confidence of both local and foreign investors.
BIDA also signed a six-year agreement with the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) to get technical help to improve the business environment in Bangladesh.
