Awami League says statue removal depends on Supreme Court

ByStaff Correspondent

The ruling party's Publicity Secretary Hasan Mahmud told a press conference in Dhaka on Saturday that the prime minister expressed her opinion to Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha.

"The Supreme Court is a constitutional body. It is not an organisation of the government. It's under the Supreme Court's authority whether to keep or remove the statue," he said.

Defending Hasina's view, the Awami Leader argued that the statue is situated next to the National Eidgah ground.

After bowing to the demand of radical organisations like Hifazat-e Islam, the prime minister came under attack by ally JaSoD and CPB, which warned her that the radicals would declare war against Bangladesh if they can have the slightest space.
