Last-minute shopping spree in Dhaka

The correspondents saw rush of shoppers at different shopping centres including Baitul Mokarram Mosque Market, Aziz Super Market, Elephant Road, Gausia, New Market and Bashundhara City mall on Friday.

A shopkeeper at Elephant Road, Md Milon, told bdnews24.com that the rush of shoppers increased from noon.

He said they were keeping their shops open until 2am for last several days.

Sadiqul Islam, an NGO employee who was buying dresses at Elephant Road on Friday said: “I could not come for shopping earlier as I was preoccupied. Today I shopped for everyone and will go (village) home tonight.”

Panjabi shops at Science Laboratory area were jam packed with buyers. Businesses selling perfumes and prayer caps and mats also saw huge rush.

Shopkeepers at Gausia, Chandni Chowk and other malls around New Market said they were happy with the sale on Friday though the rushes of buyers declined a bit compare to last several days.

Alam Khan, who runs a shoe shop at New Market, said buyers were choosy before, but now they did not have much time to examine the products. “So sale is good.”

At Bashundhara City, shops of shoes, branded garments and cosmetics witnessed more footfalls than other businesses.

Roadside vendors are also busy selling their products with the Eid only days away.
