Bangladesh may experience slow internet throughout January

BySenior Correspondent

After three of the five cables through which internet is provided in the Indian subcontinent were damaged earlier this month, the ISPs expected the repair work to end by the third week of the month.

The three damaged International Terrestrial Cables (ITCs) are of Bharti Airtel and Tata Indicom.

International Internet Gateway (IIG) operator Fiber@Home Chief Technology Officer Sumon Ahmed Sabir told bdnews24.com on Friday Bharti's repair work would take 'some more days'.

Tata Indicom would also repair its cable by the end of the month, he added.

The daily usage of the internet in Bangladesh amounts to 400 Gbps. Of that, 120 Gbps are transferred via the Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL).

The remaining 280 Gbps are imported from India.

More than 75 percent of the bandwidth is provided by ITC, an alternative to submarine cables.
