UN secretary general’s deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq told a regular media briefing that it was very concerned with the present situation in Bangladesh.

He, however, skirted another question on the BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed, who has been missing for nine days.

Families and relatives of Salahuddin have been accusing the law enforcers of kidnapping him and have asked them to set him free.

However, law enforcers denied taking him into their custody.

Asked whether the UN is taking any interest in the development, Haq said, “Lately we have talked about this issue more than once. You must be aware that I have expressed UN’s concern over the situation in Bangladesh.”

“We have nothing new to say. But we are aware of the issue you raised,” he added.

Haq also urged the Bangladesh government to uphold freedom of speech.
