Jamaat challenges HC verdict

ByStaff Correspondent

The bench of justices M Moazzam Husain, M Enayetur Rahim, and Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque on Thursday declared the party’s registration “illegal and void”.

Defence lawyer Shishir Mohammad Monir told bdnews24.com of the Jamaat appeal.

“The High Court has permitted a direct appeal in the verdict,” he said.

He said the Jamaat also sought a stay order in the appeal submitted to the chamber judge.

Jamaat has been accused of war crimes and several of its leaders are standing trial or have been convicted by special war crimes tribunals.

With its registration cancelled, the Jamaat will not be able to contest in the forthcoming parliament election due end of this year or early next unless the Supreme Court overturns the High Court order.
