Hawker Hunter gifted by India finds place in Liberation War Museum

ByStaff Correspondent

The fighter-bomber, which played a vital role in aid of Bangladesh Air Force during the 1971 war, was shifted on Wednesday to the building being built in Dhaka’s Agargaon.

India had lent the 46-foot plane to the newly formed air force in 1971, and later gifted it to the Liberation War Museum in 2000.

Museum Project Director Nesar Ahmed told bdnews24.com Bangladesh Air Force had kept the aircraft for the past 15 years because the museum lacked space to house it.

He said much of the construction work of the museum’s permanent building had been completed and space had been found for the exhibit.
However, the entry of visitors is currently restricted with construction still on.
On Thursday, work on the seven-storey building was going on in full swing.
The new building will have archives, auditoriums, car park, library and other facilities.
Liberation War Museum Chief Coordinator Rafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com the Hawker Hunter had joined the Indian Air Force in 1951.
It can carry four missiles, three rockets, and four 30mm guns.
