Dhaka South City to have public toilet in every petrol pump, CNG station: Mayor Khokan

Khokan said he will discuss the issue in a meeting with petrol pump and CNG station owners soon.

Construction of toilets for women will get top priority, said the mayor during a media interaction on Sunday.

Dhaka South Corporation covers 10 million people.

“It needs two to three hours to reach Shahbagh from Banani. Anyone may need to use a toilet at that time. The same problem persists in Dhanmondi area.”

The mayor said the city corporation will work out a plan to put up quality public toilets in free spaces at the fuel stations.

“We will soon invite the owners of the petrol pumps in the city. We will discuss if toilets can be constructed for the people, especially for women,” Khokan said.

Last month, bdnews24.com published a report on the suffering caused to Dhaka residents due to lack of public toilets.

A study in 2011 had revealed that only five toilets were just about usable in the entire capital out of 69 toilets constructed by the previous city administrations.

The study by the Centre for Urban Studies and Water Aid also exposed at least 5.5 million people in the city need to use public toilet at the time they commute by transports or foot every day.

Worse still, some 75 percent of the toilets had no special facilities for women, who make up half the city’s population.

None had facilities for children or people with disability.
