Buddhist monk murdered in Bandarban

ByBandarban Correspondent

Police said that assailants slit his throat sometime during Friday night.

Seventy-year-old Mawng Shoi Wuu was found dead in the morning by a worker of the monastery that is located at Bandarban’s Naikhyongchari Upazila, said local police’s Sub Inspector Kazi Ahsan.

Wuu was the chief of the monastery.

Bangladesh has been rocked by a series of murders of priests belonging to non-Muslim communities and also secular Muslim personalities.

Police suspect the involvement of 'homegrown' Islamist radicals but global terror groups Islamic State and Al Qaeda have reportedly claimed responsibility for these murders.

Nobody has, however, claimed responsibility for the murder of the Buddhist monk so far.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that he suspects involvement of the monk's relatives.

"We think the monk's relatives are involved," he told the media after a programme at the Rajshahi University.
