Fire ravages Glasgow School of Art’s Mackintosh building

A fire has broken out at Glasgow’s world-renown School of Art’s Mackintosh building, four years after part of the building was destroyed by another blaze.

The fire ripped through the building and the blaze spread to nearby buildings after it started in the early hours of Saturday, reported BBC News.

The Campus nightclub and O2 ABC music venue also suffered "extensive damage", according to the report.

No casualties have been reported yet, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said.

At least 120 firefighters have been dispatched to the spot to douse the fire, but the battle may be quite ‘prolonged’, Deputy Chief Officer lain Bushell said.

According to the BBC report, the celebrated building, completed in 1909 by lauded Scotland designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, was badly damaged by fire in May 2014.

Ben, an eyewitness, told the BBC the latest fire looked "much worse" than the previous one.

Soon after the incident, social media users began posting photos and dramatic videos of the fire.

Flames and thick, black, acrid smoke billowing over the building could be seen in many of the posts. 

Scotland police advised the public to avoid the area, and announced that areas around Dalhousie St, Scott St and Sauchiehall St were all affected by road closures.
