Bangladesh's Mabia Akhter earns gold in women's weightlifting in South Asian Games

Weightlifter Mabia Akhter Simanta has clinched the first gold medal for Bangladesh in this edition of the South Asia Games.

The 16-year old beat competitors from Sri Lanka and Nepal in the 63kg class in Guwahati, India on Sunday.

She lifted a total of 149 kgs combining the snatch (67 kgs) and the clean and jerk (82 kgs) at Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium.

Sri Lanka's Ayesha Vinodani (138 kgs) won the silver medal while Nepal's Jun Maya Chhantyal

(125 kgs) won the bronze in the event.

In the 58kg class, Bangladesh's Fullapati Chakma won the silver medal, lifting 144 kgs on Sunday.

Bangladesh have a tally of one gold, one silver and two bronzes in the weightlifting competition so far in the 2016 edition.
