The road transport and bridges minister underwent a successful bypass surgery at the hospital on Wednesday.

"Minister Obaidul Quader is doing better. After the operation, he is now out of danger. He will be shifted to a cabin in three to four days,” said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, or BSMMU, Director Prof Abu Naser Rizvi, who has accompanied the minister to Singapore, on Friday.

“His IOBP (intra-aortic balloon pump) machine has been removed and all health parameters are well now,” he added.

Apart from his heart condition and diabetes, the 67-year-old politician has also been suffering from a complicated breathing condition (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

On Mar 2, he was rushed to the BSMMU in a critical condition by his wife Ishratunnesa Quader after he had fallen ill.

He was found to have three arterial blocks, one of which was removed by stenting, according to BSMMU Cardiology Department Prof Syed Ali Ahsan.

Quader was flown to the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in an air ambulance once he was stable enough to travel. The hospital has formed a five-member medical panel, led by cardiologist

Dr Philip Koh, to oversee the minister’s treatment.

After undergoing tests in the hospital, the minister was diagnosed with a combination of kidney and blood-related ailments.
