“Forgive me for the problems I could not solve. I am a human being, neither an angel, nor a devil,” he said during a discussion organised by Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum on Tuesday.

Inu is expected to take oath as a member of parliament on Thursday.

President of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal or JaSoD, he won the Kushtia-2 constituency in Sunday's general election that saw the Awami League-led Grand Alliance gain an absolute majority.

“Grand Alliance is the people’s alliance. We try to work for the people during times of happiness and sorrow. That’s why the Grand Alliance candidates won by huge margins,” remarked Inu.

The ruling party secured 259 out of the 300 constituencies in Sunday’s elections. They were followed by key ally the Jatiya Party which won 20 seats. The BNP and its allies who could manage only seven amid allegations of rigging and other irregularities.

The BNP failed to lead its workers which is why it suffered a massive defeat in the polls, claimed Inu.

The people again voted for the Awami League-led coalition taking into account the development activities of the government over the last 10 years, he added.

The government's main challenge will be to sustain those strides taken towards the nation's development, said Inu.

Asked whether the Jatiya Party will form the main opposition or participate in cabinet, Inu said the prime minister will soon sit for talks with coalition allies.

“They (Jatiya Party) will join the cabinet if Sheikh Hasina invites them,” Inu said.

Jatiya Party, headed by HM Ershad, emerged as the main opposition after the BNP boycotted the 2014 election.

Ershad's wife and Jatiya Party presidium member Raushon Ershad became leader of the opposition, while three opposition MPs were given positions in cabinet.
