BNP Vice Chairman Noman pointed the finger at his rival candidate with the ‘boat’ symbol Afsarul Amin MP for the alleged attack at Halishahar Naya Bazar bend in the port city on Sunday afternoon.

Noman told the media at his home that he and his supporters came under the attack during a Victory Day programme.

He also alleged that police did nothing during the attack, but detained five of his supporters later.

The attackers carrying pistols, sticks and sharp weapons swooped down on his supporters from behind when he was delivering a speech before inaugurating the event, Noman said.

“One of the attackers pointed his pistol at me, but my supporters saved me by forming a human wall,” Noman said, alleging it was an assassination bid on him.

The BNP leader added that "never before had he faced any such attack by the Awami League in 50 years of his political career”.

Afsarul’s brother Ershadul Amin and Jubo League leader Sumon Debnath led the attackers, he claimed.

Local BNP leaders Jasim Uddin Zia and Abdus Sattar were among those injured in the attack, he said.

Pahartoli Police Station OC Sadip Kumar Das said he heard there had been a running battle between the two sides.

“But no-one has come to us with a complaint,” he said.
