Several hundred BNP activists blocked the gates to Khaleda Zia’s offices in Gulshan-2’s Road 86 on Sunday morning.

A security guard employed at the building said that BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and several other BNP leaders had left the offices late on Saturday night and had not returned on Sunday morning.

Supporters of Munshiganj-1 BNP nominee Md Abdullah blocked the front gate to the office.

They wore white cloth bands on their heads. In addition to chanting slogans, some of them were seen shoving and kicking the gates.

“We want Abdullah Bhai and will not accept anyone else from Munshiganj-1,” one of the protesters shouted.

The BNP has finalised BNP Vice Chairman Shah Moazzem Hossain as its final candidate for the seat.

Chhatra Dal activist Hamid said:

“Yes, Shah Moazzem is a leader. But he has grown old. He does not visit the area. He has no communication with our activists. It will be difficult to win the seat if we don’t pick someone who is there regularly.”

Another gate was blocked by supporters of Cumilla-4 candidate Manzurul Ahsan Munsir.

JSD General Secretary Abdul Malek Ratan was chosen as the Jatiya Oikya Front candidate for the seat.

Protesting BNP activist Sohrab said:

“Munshi Bhai is a leader from our party and is from Cumilla-4. He has been elected a member of parliament four times. But he has been rejected in favour of someone who has never been to the constituency. We don’t know him and we don’t accept him.”

Around 11am, a megaphone was used to address the protesters from inside the office.

“The office is closed today. There is no point in causing an uproar.”

On Saturday evening three BNP leaders - former state minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milan, Khaleda’s Adviser Taimur Alam Khandaker, and Assistant Organising Secretary Salimuzzaman Salim – attacked the Gulshan office after the BNP picked other nominees from their constituencies.

Several members of the BNP’s senior leadership were stuck inside at the time.
