Court jails BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Mia for hiding wealth info

A Dhaka court has jailed BNP leader Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia for three years on charges of hiding wealth information in a case filed 14 years ago.

Judge Sheikh Golam Mahbub announced the verdict on Tuesday. The court has also fined the former minister Tk 50,000, said Masud Ahmed Talukder, one of his lawyers.

Rafiqul was not present in the court when the verdict was announced, Mahmud Hossain Jahangir who represented the Anti-Corruption Commission told bdnews24.com. The judge has issued an arrest warrant for him. 

According to the case documents, the then ACC served notice on Rafiqul Islam to submit his wealth information on Apr 7, 2001.

ACC official Syed Liakat Hossain filed a case against Rafiqul with Uttara Police Station on Jan 15, 2004 when he failed to submit the wealth information by the deadline.

The official also submitted the charges to the court on Nov 30 that year. The court ordered the start of the trial on Nov 14, 2017.

The court announced the verdict on Tuesday after hearing the testimonies of six witnesses.
