The member of the party’s policymaking body National Standing Committee was put at the hospital’s intensive care unit or ICU on Saturday, his son Aninda Islam Amit told bdnews24.com on Sunday.
Tariqul has been suffering from kidney complications for a long time and was admitted to Asgar Ali Hospital in Old Dhaka a few days ago, Amit said.
He was transferred to the Apollo Hospital when his condition deteriorated, he added.
He said the party’s acting chief Tarique Rahman called from London to enquire about Tariqul’s health. Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited him on Saturday.
Amit urged all to pray for his father’s recovery.
Tariqul, who has won parliamentary elections from Jashore four times, worked as the information minister, and environment and forest minister when his party was in power.
Before becoming a member of the policymaking standing committee, he held the position of vice-president and many other important posts.
Tariqul was involved with leftist politics when he was a student of Rajshahi University. He joined the BNP after Ziaur Rahman formed the party.
He has been irregular in party activities for past few years due to illness. He attended a Standing Committee meeting for the last time in February before the jailing of party chief Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
