“The BNP is described as a terrorist party internationally after the Aug 21 attack verdict. The BNP has been recognised as a terrorist party through the judgment,” the Awami League general secretary said in Madaripur on Friday.

A Dhaka tribunal on Wednesday sentenced the then state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar and 18 others to death.

Homegrown militants in connivance with their foreign peers launched the attack, helped by the then state machinery, according to the verdict.

Quader said, “A Canadian court had earlier described the BNP as a terrorist party. Now the verdict has made it clear.”

The road transport and bridges minister made the remarks during a visit to the Padma bridge project site at Jajira.

BNP Senior Vice Chairman and party chief Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman is among 19 sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the grenade attack.

Tarique, who has been in London since 2008, is acting as the party chief as his mother is in jail after her conviction in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case in February.

Quader said the government would now try to bring Tarique, who was earlier sentenced to seven years in jail for money laundering and 10 years for corruption in the orphanage trust, back from London to make him face justice.
