BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the announcement at a press conference at the party headquarters in Dhaka’s Naya Paltan on Saturday afternoon.

“We have received permission for a rally,” he said. “We can hold the rally from 2pm to 5pm. Inshallah we will hold a successful rally tomorrow.”

“Important members of the leadership will speak at the event.”

Police granted permission to the BNP based on 22 conditions.

The BNP had originally planned to hold the rally on Thursday. The programme later pushed back to Saturday after party leaders said the police had granted permission for a rally to be held on a weekend or public holiday.

But a conflicting programme by the ruling 14 Party Alliance on the same day caused a disturbance. The BNP were finally given permission to hold their rally on Sunday.

This is the first BNP rally at Suhrawardy Udyan since the one on Nov 12, 2017. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had spoken at last years’ event.

The BNP is holding the event in order to demand their incarcerated chief’s release, to call for a free and fair election and to announce future programmes.

The last BNP rally was held in front of the party’s headquarters in Dhaka’s Naya Paltan on Sept 1.
