The party leader made with the remarks at a discussion programme arranged by a pro-BNP freedom fighters group at the party’s central office at Dhaka’s Nayapaltan on Saturday.

“We must always remember, greater unity will not be possible if we do not make sacrifices. We have to make some compromises to forge a common stance,” Fakhrul said.

“We are open to doing so. This is what the whole country wants. The others who are with us must also understand that there is no way forward to freedom without these concessions.”

The BNP has been calling for a ‘national alliance’, claiming that the country has become undemocratic under the Awami League rule.

The BNP, which previously had a four-party alliance, is now leading a 20-party coalition. The BNP is eager to expand this coalition but many parties have expressed their objection to BNP’s alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami.

Fakhrul said the BNP is meeting with various political parties following instructions from Khaleda Zia, which she delivered before she was sent to jail in a corruption case.

“We are trying to build national unity through discussions with various parties. It is an ongoing process and we are hopeful of our success,” he said.

“We will unite and fight together against the dictatorship, to free our nation, our democracy and our national leader [Khaleda Zia].”
