As Hasina snubs calls for Khaleda's release and talks, BNP turns to people

The BNP is turning to the people as the last resort after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina refused to meet its demands for release of Khaleda Zia and talks for a non-partisan election-time government.

“The only path that lies in front of us is turning to the people. The people will answer to it," BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on being asked on Monday for his reaction to Hasina’s snub.

“The prime minister’s remarks have frustrated the nation. The path she is following now leads to the establishment of a one-party rule. We don’t see any way to get the people’s verdict and she does not wish so,” he added.

Hasina on Sunday once again ruled out the possibility of having dialogue with the BNP or taking measures to make sure the party contest in the next general elections.

The BNP says it will not join the next parliamentary polls if the Awami League government does not step down and release party chairperson Khaleda from jail.

“It’s up to the parties whether they will contest in elections. What do we have to do here?” Hasina asked and added, “We can neither obstruct them from contesting in the election nor can we invite them to the polls.”

Mirza Fakhrul criticised Hasina for sticking to her tough stance on the BNP’s demands.

“She has dismissed the people’s demands and said everything will be done in line with the constitution. The constitution is made by the people and they (Awami League) have changed it a number of times to their advantage,” he said.

“We are fighting, struggling for the people’s demands. These are not only the BNP’s demands, but are also the people’s demands. We want a democratic system and a parliament where everyone will be accountable to the people.”

"The people will act on their own to change this situation and address these issues,” the BNP leader added.
