The minister’s call came at a meeting in Dhaka on Saturday, a week before the Eid.

“I assure you that the condition of highways is better than in the past years. There will be no traffic congestion. The roads will not be a major problem once the rules are followed.”

Traffic jam has been feared on the highways during Eid vacation in the rainy season.

Admitting the fact that rain might cause troubles for the Eid travellers on the Dhaka-Elenga highway, the minister said necessary steps will be taken to ease the sufferings.

“We have suspended roadwork for a smooth journey. After the festival, the work will resume.”

Assuring homebound travellers of “constant monitoring” for smooth traffic, Quader said: “I myself will be present there once the trouble is created."

The minister said he had sleepless nights during Eid. “Last year I thought I need not to worry this year. Our mindset should be changed. If the mindset is not changed then it is very difficult to bring discipline to the roads.”
