The BNP is a curse in Bangladesh politics, Awami League leader and Food Minister Qamrul Islam has said in a scathing attack on the opposition party.

He made the remark at a meeting marking the 119th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at National Press Club on Friday.

“The BNP is a curse in the politics of Bangladesh and should be removed from this land. They patronise terrorism and turn the country into a safe heaven for drug dealers when in power,” Qamrul commented.

The food minister said being the opposition, the party has exposed its stance in favour of the prevalence of drugs by questioning the drives to curb narcotics trade.

“They will spoil politics if not driven away,” he said.

He thanked the Election Commission for allowing MPs to campaign in city corporation elections, saying “it will create a level playing field”.

“Prominent BNP leaders could take part in election campaign while our leaders could not for being MP,” he pointed out.

Chitta Ranjan Das, Adviser to the Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, presided over the meeting.

Dhaka Metropolitan South Awami League General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad, former state minister for home Shamsul Haque Tuku, former MP Sarah Begum Kabari, Bangabandhu Sangkritik Jote General Secretary Arun Sarker Rana and Awami League leader Mizanur Rahman Bitu were present.
