The graduation ceremony at the Long Beach Suites in Dhaka on Wednesday came after the successful completion of a fellowship that began in December 2017 under the Strengthening Political Landscape or SPL project jointly funded by USAID and UKAID.

The programme titled 'Young Political Leader Fellowship Program' was implemented by the Democracy International.

During the fellowship period, the young leaders completed monthly residential training in Dhaka on topics such as the role of political parties in democracies, internal party democracy, campaign management, promoting peaceful elections and political communications.

In their districts, the fellows also completed advocacy campaigns on local issues and women and youth conferences to utilise the knowledge and skills learned in training.

Through the multiparty advocacy campaigns, the AL and BNP fellows brought their senior leaders together to solve local issues including waterlogging, waste management, and restoring children’s playgrounds, according to a press release issued by DI on Wednesday.

Zeinah Salahi, deputy mission director, USAID Bangladesh was the special guest on the occasion.

Other panel speakers included Rasheda Begum Hira, training affairs secretary, Central Executive Committee, BNP; ABM Mosharraf Hossain, training affairs secretary, Central Executive Committee, BNP, Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury (Nowfel) and organising secretary, Central Working Committee, Awami League.

The Strengthening Political Landscape in Bangladesh programme (SPL) is a five-year project that promotes inclusive and peaceful politics in Bangladesh by supporting political party activists and politically active citizens to be effective leaders and to advocate for more inclusive and peaceful party policies and practices.

With eight regional offices along with a head office in Dhaka, DI works with thousands of grassroots political activists across the country.
