The victim, Monir Hossain, 50, was a member of Upazila Awami League and a former president of the party’s Jagatpur union council unit.

Titas Police Station OC Nurul Islam Tipu told bdnews24.com on Saturday night they launched a drive to arrest the suspected murderer.

He said they suspected the murder took place because of the party rivalry in the area.

MA Kashem, a resident of the area, said  Monir was speaking over his mobile phone in front of his house at Bhatparha village during a power cut when the unidentified assailant shot him.

The victim was first taken to Titas Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Daudkandi Gouripur Health Complex, but died on the way, Kashem said.
