The BNP organised the programme outside the National Press Club while its Chairperson Khaleda Zia spent her 30th day in jail on Thursday in a graft case.

With banners, the leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League’s archrival BNP gathered at the spot 11am, chanting slogans demanding Khaleda’s release.

Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Moudud Ahmed, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Vice-Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo, AZM Zahid Hossain, Khaleda’s Advisory Council member Zainul Abedin Faruq and other leaders of the 20-party alliance took part in the protests.

Zainul Abedin Faruq was addressing the event when a team of DB police dragged an activist out of the gathering around 11:45am. Mirza Fakhrul condemned police action and called off the programme amid chaos.

Police assembled armoured personnel carriers and water cannons to tighten security around the press club.

Vehicles used one lane of the key road along the press club as the other lane was occupied by the protesters.

The BNP demonstrated on the same venue on Feb 12 after Khaleda was jailed for five years in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on Mar 8.

The party has since been active with demonstrations, sit-ins, hunger strikes, black-flag show, mass signature collection campaign and other protests.
