The party general secretary Obaidul Quader, also minister for road transport and bridges, will lead the delegation consisting members of both praesidium and executive committee, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla said.
The visit was initially scheduled to be started from March 11, but Shringla on Tuesday after his meeting with Quader hinted that it might be delayed for few days due to the first-ever International Solar Alliance summit in New Delhi.
The summit begins on Mar 11 will be attended by 30 head of states including President of Bangladesh Md Abdul Hamid.
The high commissioner said the visit of the Awami League delegation would “enhance the bonding between the level of political parties, and level of people to people contact”.
The visit is going to be the first of its kind since the ruling Awami League came to power in 2014 for the second consecutive term. And it comes before the next general elections scheduled to be held by the end of this year.
India was a strong supporter of the last general elections despite BNP’s boycott as the neighbouring country found that election a constitutional obligation of Bangladesh. The issue of election time government is still unresolved.
The bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India reached a new height in the last 10 years after Awami League came to power in 2009.
Both countries implemented the land boundary agreement and settled the maritime boundary dispute.
At least 108 deals including space mission, civil nuclear energy and cyber security between the countries have been signed since then. New bus and rail connectivity have been established.
Besides these, 28 socio-economic projects like ensuring safe drinking water were also implemented in different districts.
India has also allowed duty-free market access to Bangladeshi goods. People to people contacts have also been increased with India issuing 1.4 million visas last year. It was 0.7 million even in 2015.
India is also opening new consulates in Khulna and Sylhet to help facilitate visas of the two divisions.
But Teesta water sharing remained a pending issue. Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year assured his counterpart Sheikh Hasina during the New Delhi visit to resolve the issue during his tenure.
A senior official at the foreign ministry told bdnews24.com that the new Indian external affairs secretary, Vijay Keshav Gokhale, will visit Bangladesh by March as part of his SAARC countries visit.
