The hunger strike follows a human chain and sit-ins that started over a verdict that landed BNP chief Khaleda Zia in jail for five years on Feb 8, in a graft case involving Zia Orphanage Trust.

Central leaders, activists and members of BNP affiliates were found sitting on a mat and chanting slogans outside the National Press Club on Wednesday morning.

The programme that started at 10am will continue until 4pm, the leaders said.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was attending a court hearing and would join the protests later in the day, said the leaders.

BNP Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Vice-Chairman Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf, Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Joint Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Khairul Kabir Khokon and Organising Secretary Fazlul Haque Milon were present.

Pro-BNP teachers, physicians, engineers and lawyers took turns to speak for Khaleda’s freedom.

Leaders of 20-party alliance: Shahadat Hossain Selim, Hamdullah Al Mehedi, and Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan were also present.

Police personnel and water cannons are in position to avert untoward situation.
