Police detained Khaleda’s aide Shimul Biswas after her conviction, BNP says 

Police detained Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, a special aide to Khaleda Zia, in the court area after a verdict sentenced the BNP chief to five years in prison for corruption, according to a party leader.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the law enforcers detained Shimul Biswas, who accompanied Khaleda to the court, in Bakhshibazar on Thursday.

bdnews24.com Chief Political Correspondent Sumon Mahmud said police detained Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Rajib Ahsan and two other members of the organisation after a clash in Naya Paltan near the BNP’s headquarters in the afternoon.

Sumon said a group of activists of JCD, the BNP’s student affiliate, led by Rajib, took out a protest procession around 4:45pm against the verdict.

The clash started when police tried to disperse the demonstrators by charging baton. The JCD protesters also pelted brickbats at the law enforcers, Sumon said.

In Chittagong, police detained 10 leaders and activists of the party, including its port city unit chief Shahdat Hossain, during clashes before the court in Dhaka delivered the verdict.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner SM Mostain Hossain told bdnews24.com that the BNP leaders and activists pelted the law enforcers with brickbats injuring eight of them.
