“City corporation election is a local government election. It has nothing to do with the national parliament elections. It won’t have any effect on the next parliamentary polls,” he said in reply to reporters’ queries after inaugurating the Insurance Fair in Sylhet on Friday.

He also said the Rangpur city polls have proved that the election system in Bangladesh is neutral.

“As there are many political parties in Bangladesh, it is natural for them to win in parts of the country. This election has proved the neutrality of the country’s election system,” he said.

Muhith, who had worked as the finance minister of Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad’s Cabinet, admitted that the party had a strong position in Rangpur.

On Thursday, Jatiya Party’s Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa was elected mayor of Rangpur by defeating the Awami League’s Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu by a huge margin.

After inaugurating the Insurance Fair at Kabi Nazrul Auditorium, Muhith visited the stalls.

State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan was also present at the programme chaired by Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority Chairman Md Shafiqur Rahman Patwary.

The fair, with participation of 32 firms, will end on Saturday. The companies settled insurance claims of around Tk 190 million at the inauguration.
