“This government is a like a huge chunk of rock set in on this nation and it needs to be hammered down,” the BNP secretary general told activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of BNP, on Wednesday.

A day after Mugabe’s resignation made the international headlines, Fakhrul said: “Strongman Mugabe was forced to step down. But, such an important incident hardly found any space in our newspapers, mainly because the local autocrats simply do not want it to be published.

“This shows how this government is trying to influence the mass media and all other institutions. The chief justice was forcefully sent on leave. We know all the drama that took place,” said Fakhrul, whose party has so far failed twice in the last six years in its movements to topple the government.

“It looks like that they will not budge off easily, so you have to take up hammers to drive them out,” he said addressing the activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of BNP.

“We have grown old, we can talk, but we lack the energy. You step forward, unite and you will see all the barriers crumbling.”

The programme held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh marked the birth anniversary of BNP Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman.

In a recent statement, BNP leader Moudud Ahmed cautioned the Awami League of an “ignominious departure” and since had been facing heat from the ruling party leaders.

Fakhrul also came down hard on the government over the amendment of the Banking Companies Act.

“They have shattered our economy. Now four people from one family can take turns to become directors and stay in office for nine years. The banks are destroying the economy by plundering,” the BNP stalwart claimed.

“See how the Bismillah Group and Hall-Mark Group have embezzled billions. They have created a circle of looters.”
