Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda faced criticised after hailing BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at a meeting with the party's delegation during the commission's recent talks on the next parliamentary election.

Later in the meeting with the Awami League, he praised the ruling party and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Referring to Huda's comments at both meetings, Mirza Fakhrul told a discussion at Dhaka Reporters' Unity on Saturday: "He wants to bring the political parties to the election. He tried to make both the BNP and Awami League happy."

"But we want to make it clear that there is no need to fawn anyone. There will be no benefit in making such comments.

"Show some work to prove your impartiality," he said.

Earlier, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said about the CEC's comments that it might have been his strategy to bring all the parties to the election.

Speaking at the discussion on Saturday, Fakhrul demanded equal opportunity for all the parties in the election campaign.

"It can't be that the Awami League is using helicopters in its campaign while we are barred from organising rallies, our chief Khaleda Zia and other leaders and activists have to appear in court every week," he said.

He said the authorities must withdraw the cases against the BNP leaders and activists and dissolve current parliament before the election to ensure equal opportunity for all.

"The election cannot be held without the BNP. The people want to see every party in the election," he warned.
