The BNP will take part in the next parliamentary election despite all odds because of the upsurge in popularity the party witnessed in recent days, senior party leader Moudud Ahmed has said.

He adds that party chief Khaleda Zia will create "such a mass upsurge that the government will be compelled to reach a consensus with the BNP".

"We will take part in the election this time. Get ready for that," Moudud told a discussion at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday.

"There will be a mass uprising in the election if you don't reach a consensus with us," he said pointing to the government, adding "People's level of toleration has reached the limit. The people have no other way (but to revolt)," the BNP Standing Committee member said.

He said the ruling Awami League leaders would sense mass upsurge when Khaleda would travel outside Dhaka during the election campaign.

"You will be compelled to sit, reach a consensus then because the next election will not take place if the BNP does not take part in it," the BNP leader said.

"I also want to add that we will take part in the next election despite all odds, no matter how bad the situation is," he said.

Moudud also blamed the ruling party, its youth front Awami Juba League and student front Bangladesh Chhatra League for the recent attacks on Khaleda's motorcade in Feni.

"We strongly condemn these," he said.
