"I think the government will gain nothing from such incidents. They will rather further be alienated from the people," she added.

The BNP chief was replying to reporters' queries after visiting a Rohingya refugee camp at Ukhia in Cox's Bazar on Monday.

Her motorcade came under the attack soon after her car passed Feni's Mohammad Ali Bazar on its way to Cox's Bazar on Saturday.

The attackers, carrying sticks, damaged at least 30 cars, including some of the media. They also beat up some journalists.

"You know that we have come here for humanitarian reasons. We want to provide some help to the Rohingyas. But we came under attack on our way. Many journalists were also injured," she said.

The BNP alleges that the local Awami League leaders and activists carried out the attack, while the ruling party says the BNP staged the incident.

"The government knows who carried out the attack. They have been shown images (of the attackers). I want the government to stop this," Khaleda said.

The BNP chief also urged the government to 'shun such attacks' and to work together with the BNP 'for the sake of humanity'.
