"It was an unwarranted incident. Now, it's settled," Kotwali Police Station OC Jasim Uddin told bdnews24.com after releasing Manju on Sunday night.

"We've released him after the victim withdrew his complaint following a compromise," he added.

Manju, President of the Chittagong District Road Transport Owners Group, is a contractor. He is a former general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League's Chittagong University unit and a central member of the Juba League.

Police detained Manju on Saturday night after the shooting at the Officer’s Club next to the MA Aziz Stadium.

The victim is local Juba League leader Md Jainal, the younger brother of Chittagong District Council member SM Alamgir. He was being treated at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

bdnews24.com tried to contact Alamgir for comments on the 'compromise' they had made, but his mobile phone was switched off.

Earlier on Sunday morning, Manju's supporters blocked the Oxygen-Hathazari road at several points to protest against the detention of their leader.

They left the road after police spoke to them around 1am.
