Govt trying to pile pressure on chief justice, says BNP

The BNP claims that the government is 'trying to create pressure' on the chief justice over the 16th constitutional amendment verdict.

Speaking at a party event on Sunday, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they were concerned over media reports of the Awami League general secretary's meeting at the chief justice's residence.

"You are now pressuring the chief justice to change the verdict."

The 16th Amendment to Constitution empowered parliament to sack top court judges on the grounds of misconduct and incompetence.

Last year, the High Court declared the amendment ‘illegal’ and the decision was upheld on Jul 3 by the Appellate Division. The full verdict was finally released by the Supreme Court on Aug 1.

The ruling party has criticised the verdict, but the BNP describes it as historic.

"We don't know what the court or the chief justice will do. But the people of Bangladesh will never accept this," said BNP Secretary General Alamgir.

He said they were 'concerned' over the newspaper reports that AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader went to the chief justice's residence last night. “It's a plot to destroy democracy.”
