They were detained in front of Planners’ Tower where the BNP organised an event to sign up new members into the party.

“Police raided the area on a tip-off that a secret meeting was ongoing,” said Deputy Commissioner of police Md Maruf Hossain Sarder.

“They tried to flee but police caught four of them.”

Rabiul Alam, general secretary of BNP Dhanmondi unit, said BNP arranged the programme on the sixth floor of the building at Bangla Motor. BNP’s President for Dhaka south Habibun-Nabi Khan Sohel inaugurated the session.

Asked if those detained belonged to BNP, officer Maruf said: “BNP did not inform police anything about the meeting.”

Kazi Abul Bashar, secretary of BNP (Dhaka south), condemned the police action.

“Police arrived when we were leaving the building after holding our programme. They stopped me on my way and asked me to show my identity card.”

“I heard that they detained four people after I left. I strongly condemn this move,” said Bashar urging the police to release the activists.
