Bangladesh will prosper only if voters return the Awami League to power for another five years, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said.

The ruling party president made the remark urging support for the 2019 national election at a ceremony for the party's 68th founding anniversary on Friday.

“People shouldn't forget that the Awami League brought all the achievements the country boasts of today. Bangladesh and Awami League complement each other.”

“To keep the pace of progress steady, please let Awami League serve you again,” Hasina said.

Awami League, one of Bangladesh's oldest political parties, returned to power for a second consecutive term following the 2014 election.

It kept celebrations simple this year for Jumu'atul-Widaa, last Friday of Ramadan, and Lailatul Qadr, the highly revered 27th day of Ramadan.

Hasina unveiled the foundation stone for the party's new office building at Dhaka’s Bangabandhu Avenue. She paid floral tributes before a mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation, at his old house in Dhanmondi road No. 32.

She was accompanied by Awami League advisory council members Amir Hossain Amu and Tofail Ahmed, presidium members Matia Chowdhury, Sahara Khatun, Mosharraf Hossain and General Secretary Obaidul Quader.

National flags and party flags were hoisted at the Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhanmondi road No. 32, at Bangabandhu Avenue and at party offices across the city.

Hasina urged leaders and activists of the ruling party to follow the ideology of Bangabandhu and not bother only about personal gains. She also slammed people who criticised Bangbandhu.

“They said Bangabandhu was a revolutionary, a leader but not a good ruler. These critics themselves opposed Bangladesh’s independence,” said Hasina, daughter of Sheikh Mujib.

“There are many who follow an anti-liberation sentiment. These people will always conspire against good.”
