The BNP Standing Committee member alleged in a human chain programme in Dhaka on Sunday that the government was slapping ‘false’ cases and arresting opposition leaders and activists.

“They have stuck in quicksand. The more they move the more they will sink,” he said.

“This government will have to step down,” he added.

The demonstration was organised to demand release of the party’s Dhaka city south unit leaders Nabi Ullah, Tanvir Adel Khan and Tanvir Ahmed Robin.

Nazrul mentioned the Awami League’s 1969 history in support of his argument that “arrests cannot stop protests”.

“I’ve found it difficult to understand how that political party forgot its own history after coming to power. All the Awami League leaders, except Amena Begum, were arrested during the uprising in 1969. Could they be stopped at the time? No. The Pakistan government could not remain in power,” he said.

“And it is the reality that this Awami League government will meet the same fate. It won’t be able to remain in power by arresting opposition leaders and activists,” he added.

He urged the activists to get ready to launch a movement on orders from BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
