Awami League shelves programme to celebrate Hasina's birthday after Syed Haq's death

Some programmes to celebrate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's birthday on Wednesday have been cancelled or deferred after the death of celebrated writer Syed Shamsul Haq.

Ruling Awami League deferred a discussion while its student affiliate Bangladesh Chhatra League called off a procession following Hasina's orders, Prime Minister's Special Assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil told bdnews24.com on Tuesday.
 
The poet, author and playwright died of lung cancer at a Dhaka hospital in the afternoon.
 
Syed Haq was the convenor of the Shilpakala Academy committee to organise the celebration of Prime Minister Hasina's birthday. She is turning 69 on Wednesday.
 
The Academy has also postponed the programme to celebrate Hasina's birthday after Haq's death.
 
The BCL programme was scheduled for morning and the Awami League discussion for afternoon.
 
The ruling party's youth front, Juba League, however, decided to continue with its plan to hold a discussion in the morning, its President Omar Faruq said.
 
Hasina, currently in the US after attending the UN General Assembly, is celebrating the birthday with her son Sajeeb Ahmed Joy and members of his family in Virginia.
