A faction led by Ilias Hossain bin Helali and Md Delowar Hossain chased and beat up members of another faction, headed by Akter Hossain and Abul Hasan, in front of the National Press Club on Saturday morning.

Both factions had planned a human chain programme there to demonstrate against acts of militancy.

“Helali’s followers swooped down on us and drove us out to prevent us from speaking about Bangabandhu,” Abul Hasan, general secretary of the second faction, alleged while speaking to bdnews24.com.
He also accused the Helali faction of working at the behest of the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Hasan claimed at least 16 of their followers were injured in the assault.
However, Helali, the leader of rival faction, trashed the allegations.
He claimed they had gone there following “the prime minister’s directive” to organise a human chain protest against militancy.
“They obstructed us with the help of the Jamaat and Hifazat-e Islam,” Helali further claimed. “But our supporters drove them out later.”
