Clash between AL supporters at polling centre

A clash has erupted between the supporters of two Awami League candidates contesting councillor positions in Dhaka South City Corporation.

The clash at around 12 noon in front of the Kabi Nazrul College polling centre was brought under control after law enforcers opened fire and lobbed teargas shells.

According to bdnews24.com reporter, the clash occurred between the supporters of AL-backed candidate Yar Mohammad Yaru and Mohammad Salim, who had not got AL sponsorship.

Supporters of Md Salim alleged that fake votes had been cast in that centre since morning.

At around 12pm the local Chhatra League activists ousted the supporters of Md Salim from the centre.

A clash erupted when they forcibly entered the centre.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Sutrapur Zone’s Assistant Commissioner Nurul Amin told the reporters, “We have brought the situation under control after firing in air and lobbing tear gas shells. We couldn’t tell the situation from inside the centre.”

However, moments later two loud explosions of hand made bombs were heard from inside the centre, forcing the voters to rush out immediately.

Anwar Hossain, one of the voters told bdnews24.com, “I came to cast my vote but couldn’t. They are stamping fake votes inside.”

The presiding officer of the centre Kazi Sana Ullah said, “At around 11am the assistant returning officer called me to inform that voting would be postponed until the situation becomes normal. Now the situation has been brought under control and voting has been resumed. However, the number of voters is less now.”
