He also urged the prime minister to arrest BNP chief Khaleda Zia, who announced the blockade on Jan 5.

About 1.5 million students will sit for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations scheduled to start from Feb 2.

But the BNP rejected calls from top government officials, including the education minister, to end its blockade before the SSC tests.

The party on Friday announced a 72-hour shutdown from Sunday, a day before the SSC examinations.

Speaking at a programme in Dhaka on Friday, Minister Khan warned Khelda: "The SSC tests will start from Feb 2. If you do not lift the blockade by then, [we'll] cut off your power, water and gas connections...

"We'll lay siege to your office."

Khaleda has been staying at her Gulshan office since Jan 3 when police prevented her from leaving the place to go to the BNP headquarters at Naya Paltan.

She called the blockade two days later, which has so far claimed at least 40 lives.
