Her Gulshan office has been surrounded by police since Saturday night and they have reportedly stopped her from leaving it twice. The government, however, is refusing to admit that this is forcible confinement.

Earlier on Monday, Khaleda's press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan told bdnews24.com: "There are events marking the Murder of Democracy Day across the country including Dhaka. Rallies usually happen in the afternoon. So, Khaleda Zia will leave the office premises anytime in the afternoon."

bdnews24.com's Chief Political Correspondent Sumon Mahmud reported from the scene that police locked the main entrance from outside as the former prime minister's SUV was being prepared to move out.

Security measures had been beefed up around her office since morning.

Eleven trucks loaded with sand and bricks have been placed to close off the road that leads to the BNP chief's office.

Three police trucks, a water-cannon and an armoured personnel carrier have also been deployed on the street.
