The oldest member of the party’s Standing Committee was picked up around 8:10pm on Wednesday, said bdnews24.com Chief Political Correspondent Sumon Mahmud from the scene. But he was released shortly afterwards.

His detention had come hours after former BNP MP Sarder Sakhawat Hossain Bokul was picked up from in front of Khaleda’s Gulshan residence.

Gani was detained along with four others, including Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal leader Aminul Islam, while entering the BNP chief’s office.

DMP’s Gulshan zone Assistant Commissioner Nurul Amin said they escorted Gani home.

“We did not even arrest him, how can we release him? He wanted to enter the [BNP chief’s] office, but we escorted him to his house from there,” he claimed.
