Fakhrul, Moudud land in jail

Three Dhaka courts have ordered several top BNP leaders including its acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir into jail after they turned themselves in.

The courts of metropolitan magistrates Shahrair Mahmud Adnan, Mohammad Saifur Rahman and Asaduzzaman Nur gave the orders separately rejecting bail petitions of senior leaders including Moudud Ahmed and Mirza Abbas in several cases.

Earlier in the day, Fakhrul and other top leaders including Goyeshar Chandra Roy, Abdullah Al Noman, Syed Mozzam Hossain Alal, Shahid Uddin Choudhury Annee surrendered to court in three cases out of seven and sought bail, their lawyer Sanaullah Mia said.

Among the accused, Aman and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi are already behind bars in other cases.

Police have pressed charges in court in these three cases.

Two of the three cases were filed at Paltan Police Station and the other with Shahjahanpur police over clashes, vandalism and torching of vehicles on Mar 2.

One of the cases, filed under the Speedy Trial Act with the Paltan police, implicated 26 persons including Fakhrul, Moudud, Goyeshar, Noman, Amanullah Aman and Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal President Moazzem Hossain Alal.

Another case filed at the same police station accused 44 leaders and activists of the BNP including Moudud, Goyeshar, Mirza Abbas, Aman and Alal.

The case filed with the Shahjahanpur police implicated 23 individuals including Fakhrul, Moudud, Abbas, Noman and Alal.
