Dhaka, Apr 9 (BDNEWS) – As the day of Proclamation of Independence of Bangladesh will be observed Monday, the draft writer of the historical document Barrister M Amir-ul Islam has said the fundamental document is being violated and ignored every now and then.
"The Proclamation of Independence, the fundamental document of the independence and constitution of the country, is being violated and ignored every now and then by the anti-liberation forces," said Barrister Islam while talking to BDNEWS recalling the historic event.
The proclamation was adopted on April 10 and read out on April 17 in 1971 during oath-taking ceremony of the Bangladesh government in exile at Baiddyanathtola of Meherpur, which was later renamed as Mujibnagar.
The proclamation was incorporated in the Bangladesh constitution of 1972 and later repealed by the subsequent government of after the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
"It was the first constitutional document of the independence of Bangladesh which reiterated the 26th March declaration of independence of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. On the basis of this document, acknowledgement of the independence of Bangladesh had been sought to the countries of the world and the nine-month long liberation war was launched in 1971," he said.
The renowned jurist said the independence of Bangladesh can be compared with that of only United States of America (USA).
"Only two countries of the world had made the proclamations of their independences - one is the USA and another Bangladesh. The proclamation of independence is historically very important, since we did not have our independence on the basis of any donation paper, but the proclamation of independence. The independence of Bangladesh from Pakistani misrule is different from that of British colonial rule," he said.
Terming the Proclamation of Independence as the genesis of Bangladesh Constitution Barrister Amir said that ensuring human dignity, social justice, empowerment of people were the main principles of the proclamation.
"According to proclamation independence, the people are the source of all powers and fundamental and human rights of the people of the country has now become the hostage to the autocratic government," he said.
