Pahela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year, was welcomed in Tripura wishing peace, prosperity and goodwill.
The day was marked by various cultural and traditional programmes organised across the state.
In Tripura the day is a state holiday.
Pahela Baishakh or the first day of the month of Baishak generally falls on 14th or 15th of April of the Georgian calendar. This year it is 1422 Bongabdo.
From early morning people were seen visiting temples and other places of worships, wearing new clothes, to pray for a happy and prosperous new year.
For Bengali traders of the state, the day marks the beginning of the new accounting year.
Parimal Chandra Saha, a visiting businessman said: “Bengali’s are known for celebrating 13 festivals in 12 months. Setting aside all our sorrows of the previous year, we welcome the new year with festivities and joy.”
Women in traditional sarees put vermilion on the walls of temples and on each other’s forehead and pray for long life of their husband and peace and prosperity of their family.
“Every year we start the new year praying at temple for peace and prosperity. We hope peace will prevail throughout the world and that people will lead a healthy and prosperous life,” Dipali Rani Saha, a housewife, said.
