Eviction drive in Laldiar Char

Chittagong Port authorities have begun evicting people from 21 hectares of land at Laldiar Char near the coast of Karnaphuli River. Many residents of the area had earlier abandoned their homes. Those remaining began vacating the area on Monday. Some were seen carrying portions of their brick and mud houses with them. Most of them, however, are selling off these structures for throwaway prices. Others were seen in tears, taking off with just their essentials as they could not afford transport, leaving their homes behind. Photo: Suman Babu
