Health Minister Zahid Maleque said he has instructed Essential Drugs Company Limited or EDCL to produce this drug in Bangladesh.

“We have to buy this from outside. Private companies do not want to make TB drugs,” he said at a press briefing on Thursday on the World Health Day on April 7.

The theme of this year is “universal health coverage for primary health care with a focus on equity and solidarity”.

The health minister highlighted the government’s measures to ensure health services for all and said they are also planning to make TB drugs in Bangladesh.

The government distributes TB drugs free as part of its campaign to end this infectious disease. Patients need to take those costly drugs for long. All those drugs are being imported.

Secretary to health services Md Ashadul Islam and additional secretary Habibur Rahman were also present, among others, at the press briefing.
